When you think of important parts of your car, what comes to mind?  The engine, tires, or even the windows?  As car washing professionals, we’ve noticed that there’s one detail that many people overlook – the headlights.  When we ask our clients about it, many say that they didn’t even realize that they needed to be cleaned until they noticed how dim they were.  While we do offer headlight cleaning services at Rinzer, we also know that sometimes you need a quick fix so that you can get to where you need to be.  That’s why we’re going to tell you how to clean your headlights in 5 easy steps and what products you can use.

What Products to Use

There are both store-bought products and household items that can be used to clean your headlights.  Here are 3 popular options:

1. Store-bought: When you go to your local grocery store, you’ll find products that are made for this specific purpose.  Look for products labeled “headlight restoration kit” or “headlight lens restoration.”

2. Baking soda: Baking soda is a great cleaning agent because it can easily dissolve grease and oil.  All you have to do is mix baking soda with enough warm water to make a paste.

3. Vinegar: Vinegar is another common household item that can be used to clean different surfaces.  Just mix equal parts vinegar and warm water.

*You’ll also need: clean rags or towels, a mild cleanser (such as dish soap), a sponge, and water for rinsing.

How to Clean a Dull Headlight

Follow these 5 easy steps to clean your headlights:

  1. Clean the surface with a mild cleanser
The first thing you want to do is remove any dirt or accumulated gunk that’s on the surface using a mild cleanser.
  2. Dry surface
Wipe the surface until it’s completely dry. Make sure to use a clean towel or rag and avoid placing it on the ground between uses.
  3. Apply headlight cleaner
Apply your headlight cleaner with a sponge, applying light pressure in small, circular motions.  Be careful not to get the cleaning agent on the car paint, as it can damage the paint (depending on what product you use).  Leave the cleanser on the surface for a couple of minutes before moving to the next step.
  4. Wash off cleaner
Using a sponge and water, clean off the product from the headlights.
  5. Clean off excess product
Using a clean rag or towel, clean off any excess product that wasn’t washed away with the water.  Your headlights should now be brighter and cleaner than before, therefore improving your safety on the road.
